On a cold day during a 1901 baseball game in New
York, concessionaire Harry Stevens struggled to sell cold ice cream and
soda to freezing customers. Having no luck, he sent his salesperson out
to buy dachshund sausages and rolls. Vendors sold them by yelling out
"They're red hot! Get your dachshund suasages while they're red hot!"
Sports cartoonist Tad Dorgan, who sat idly by searching for ideas, drew
a cartoon of barking dachshund sausages hunkering warmly in their buns.
He couldn't spell "dachshund", so he substituted "hot dog" instead. The
cartoon was a sensational hit, and the term "hot dog" was born.

In
Quebec, Canada, an old law states that margarine must be a different
color than butter. This law is the result of Quebec dairy lobbyists'
pressure to ''protect'' their dairy business. They claimed margarine
was beginning to resemble butter, as to be mistaken for real butter.
Make margarine unattractive, and consumers would stick to butter. The
Quebec government caved in, and tried to impose a dark
vermilion-coloured margarine, which was disgusting. The colour,
finally, at the other extreme, is a pallid almost-white-colourless
margarine.
