owl with book cartoon

  1. On a cold day during a 1901 baseball game in New York, concessionaire Harry Stevens struggled to sell cold ice cream and soda to freezing customers. Having no luck, he sent his salesperson out to buy dachshund sausages and rolls. Vendors sold them by yelling out "They're red hot! Get your dachshund suasages while they're red hot!" Sports cartoonist Tad Dorgan, who sat idly by searching for ideas, drew a cartoon of barking dachshund sausages hunkering warmly in their buns. He couldn't spell "dachshund", so he substituted "hot dog" instead. The cartoon was a sensational hit, and the term "hot dog" was born.
