owl with book cartoon

  1. Goosebumps are an obsolete impulse to erect hair on the body in order to keep it warm.
  2. The ball on top of a flagpole has no purpose other than decoration.
  3. Pork and Beans is actually cooked inside the can. The piece of pork starts out large and boils down to permeate the beans.
  4. In the vast majority of assorted chocolate boxes, the caramels are sqaure, nougats rectangular, nuts oval, and cremes circular.
  5. Pay toilets were originally meant to defray costs of cleaning, but were abandoned after it was discovered that they were trashed even more by angry patrons.
  6. The American Podiatric Association recommends buying shoes in mid-afternoon:  the time when the feet are most likely to be swollen.
  7. The bottom half of a hamburger bun is always thinner strictly for aesthetic purposes.
  8. The practice of yelling "fore" in golf stems from English military times when the back line in a firing troop would yell to the line in front to 'ware before' (get down or risk getting shot). This was shortened to "fore" in modern times, popularized first by Gerald Ford.
  9. Modern executions are always held between midnight and 7 a.m. They used to be held in public at high noon, but city merchants didn't like the distraction, and moral arguments soon grew in response to the football-fan like crowds. Eventually public executions were banned and moved out-of-sight, out-of-mind.
  10. Ants gather on sidewalks because of the heat and bounty of dropped food.
  11. Until 1888, Heinz bottles were sealed with a cork. Also, ketchup necks are so small because ketchup used to be extremely runny.  The neck assisted in the slow-down of the fluid.
  12. The average home lawn would yield about $2,000 worth of fruits and vegetables per year if used for harvest ground.
  13. The average body temperature according to Fahrenheit was originally 100 degrees, but later dropped to 98.6 after realizing the miscalculation.
  14. Curad bandages glow in the dark from the static electricity caused during opening.
  15. Donuts contain holes to avoid gooey centers. Without the hole, they would have to be cooked longer, resulting in the over-frying of the exterior.
  16. Newspapers tear smoothly vertically, but not horizontally.
  17. Shorter people tend to have higher voices than taller people.
  18. In bird droppings, the black spot in the middle is feces, while the surrounding white is urine.
  19. Toilet seat covers serve no health purpose because no disease can be transmitted from a toilet seat.
  20. Bell bottoms are worn by sailors because they fit easily over boots, can be easily rolled up, can be used as floatation devices, and can be taken off easier than regular pants.
  21. Humans can't smell their own body odor because our olfactory nerve is easily fatigued in the presence of odors. Thusly, it doesn't even let itself be "bothered" by our scent to avoid information overload.
  22. The wrinkling of skin (pruning) after long exposure to water, is not the skin shrinking, rather expanding.
  23. Absolutely nothing happens to the used razor blades that are thrown down the used razor blade slots in hotels. They accumulate between the studs of the walls to collect dust forever.
  24. Chocolate bunnies at Easter were invented for the sole purpose of boosting chocolate sales between St. Valentines Day and Mother's Day.
  25.  Wisdom teeth are an obsolete eating tool once used by cavemen to chew meat several times harder than beef jerky.
