Voting Question: Information about owning a 10 gallon freshwater fish tank?
Some of my main questions are:
-How to properly clean the tank and where to put the fish while doing it
-How often to feed them
-Do the weekend food blocks work?
-How often should I clean the tank
-How often to change filter
-Is there anything I should put in the water (ie.Aquarium salt etc.)
-Anything I should know about algae eaters
-Some recommended types of fish to get (I want different types and I like colourful ones)
-The average cost of a filter
Any other information would be very helpful, thanks
Resolved Question: Re-doing my 10 Gallon Tank and Have Some Questions?
I want to redo my 10 gallon freshwater tropical tank but have a couple questions before I spend more money on it. I already have the Whisper in-tank filter by Tetra but was thinking about putting in a "bubble wall" because I think they look cool and the fish will enjoy the extra aeration. However, I'm not sure how to go about that. What exactly will I need to buy?
Also, for the fish and tank that I have what types of plants will be good/hardy for my aquarium? I believe with the bulbs I have that this would be considered low lighting. (note: I plan on trying to breed the guppies later on).
I plan on having guppies, tetras (most likely neons), chinese algae eaters, and possibly zebrafish. Any other options would be apprieciated too, although I know I cannot house too many since my tank is on the smaller side.
Resolved Question: Freshwater Aquarium advice needed! When should I add fish?
Hi, I have just set up a 20 gallon freshwater aquarium about a month ago. I have a few plants (real) and rocks but no fish yet. I have done water changes each week (20%) and am adding cycle as directed. However I am not seeing any change in the Ammonia or Nitrite at this time, when should I expect to see it rise? I was told it will shoot up after a couple of weeks then start to come down. I am seeing algae growing on the gravel already. Also when is a good time to add fish and what types are good for beginners. Should I get something that eats algae?
Thank you.
Resolved Question: whos eggs.?
i presume these are eggs, i have found small white egg type all over my freshwater aquarium, they are small, bright white and i have founf them in groups(but not touching like in clumps) all over the tank, attached to ornaments, bogwood and coconut shells, i have thought they could be the snails but i see them as clump egg makers, and they noramlly release eggs on glass and such, anyways my current stock of fish is....5mixed sex platies,2cloud minnows,2gold cloud minnows,2pepper corys(the suspects at the moment),2 algae eating shrimp,2zigzag snails, and some other lone fish who cant have kids since they dont have a partner.
Resolved Question: How do you clean the film off of a used 55 gallon tank? I have tried vinegar and stuff from petsmart.noresults?
This is everything it came with....I think I got a steal. She had it set up for saltwater and then converted it to freshwater. I have a ton of stuff that I don't know how to use! I haven't been successful in getting the python to work either. I can hook it to my spicket (outside) but not my sink but I can't hook the tubing to the sink/spicket attachment. It has a male end on attachment but It is to big and will not thread. Help with that would be great as well. I am getting discouraged. I tried to attach pics but it won't let me. You can look at it on craigslist under SC, then Upstate, the type in fishtank, it is the one that is for 200 and says clemson/anderson for location. The water is very murky looking and maybe that is what the film is. So I am guessing bacteria, fungal, or algae. Please help.....my husband says it is a waste of money and I should have bought a new lens for my camera. But I started this hobby with a 10 gal and I absolutely love it. It is very relaxing to lay on the couch and watch the fish.
Please only aquarium experts or ones with years of exoerience reply!!! I I know you cannot use soap products on tanks.

Resolved Question: What kind of snail is this?
So I was looking to add a couple nerite snails to my freshwater tank to help cure an algae problem, since I've read lots about how they're great cleaners and can survive in freshwater despite being brackish snails. I called up a local aquarium store, and the guy said he'd order some for me if his suppliers had some.
I called again today and a new guy confirmed that they had gotten them in stock, so I picked a couple up.
Except these guys look nothing like any of the nerites that I have seen online! I've never seen one in real life and am far from being familiar with the different types... but these snails are way different than I expected. I trusted the guy in the store, and he seemed to know what kind of snails I was talking about on the phone, but now that I look more closely at these snails, I doubt that they're actual nerites.
Here's some pictures of the snails that I just picked up:

And here's a picture of nerites the way I expected them to look:

Are these nerites? If not, what kind? I'm not set up for saltwater, so I'm not sure what to do with these guys if it turns out that they're something completely different...
Not looking forward to having to return them and explain that, although I've never *actually* seen one, I don't think these are nerite snails...
Help!
I just called the guy and asked if he were sure if they were nerites... he said "Well, it says they were on the invoice."
He says that the ones he gave me are brackish, so if I slowly acclimate them to freshwater (they're in saltwater now) they should survive.
Think he's right?
Here goes nothing...
