Resolved Question: I need a 'freshwater fishspert' about aquarium set up for glassfish (Parambassis ranga) - NOT PAINTED!?
I know that most people are going to say "get a 10 gallon," "get a betta instead," or "bowls are cruel." I don't need any of those as an answer. I am responsible. I have been doing research for quite a while and not asking around - til' now obviously. I do not intend to purchase fish until I have a decent setup going and feel that it is good and ready... no 'tester fish.' I live in a dorm with certain size restrictions on aquariums (very small - desktop size if preferred) and they prefer that students have a bowl for aquatic life over a big and noisy aquarium. Again, the answer is not 'betta.' I have kept goldfish alive for about 5 years at a time and bettas at 3 years before in a bowl setup AND have had guppies in an aquarium setup before. I would like to step it up quite a bit and get a few glassfish (NOT painted - they are beautiful as nature intended them to be - I am against fish painting.) Here is where I need help. I have been doing my homework and I just get lost in all of this information. I have read that glassfish, in the wild, live in fresh, still standing water. The reason why people place them into brakish (salted) aquarium water is because it seems to reduce stress more and those that have been painted surive better. Again, I am NOT getting painted fish. I may salt the water a bit. My questions are: How many gallons to each fish? (Not going by one inch fish = 1 gallon rule here ---- think more along the lines of how much ammonia they produce - are they cleaner than most fish or messier?) Glassfish survive well, in the wild, in still standing water... can I keep them with minimum cycling and some plant life, can I keep them without cycling and regular water changes? If I get a 5 gallon, how many Glassfish can I keep without overcrowding? If I get a 7 gallon, how many Glassfish can I keep without overcrowding? Help if you can. Thank you! Actually, Darwin, they are NOT brackish. I will repeat myself: "The reason why people place them into brakish (salted) aquarium water is because it seems to reduce stress more and those that have been painted surive better. Again, I am NOT getting painted fish. I may salt the water a bit." Here is just one site... prove it as not being credible and I will follow the advice in your answer: "Glassfish have a reputation for being difficult to keep alive, but this belief largely stems from the myth that they require brackish water to survive. In nature, these fish live in standing water such as bodies created from dammed mountain streams, not estuaries or other areas of brackish water. If they are kept in true freshwater, they seem to be fairly hardy fish, no more difficult to keep than many tetras" (FishLore.com). Parambassis ranga! NOT 'Chanda ranga.'
Resolved Question: Wild fish in aquarium with pet store fish?
My brother got a catfish and a bass out of my lake, they are both simliar in size to my fish I already have in my freshwater aquarium. I have cichlids so I know there is a chance they could just get eaten but is is safe to mix these fish? My dad says they might have diseases that will get my fish sick. ???
Resolved Question: How do i kill plant/weeds in my lake i think its micro sword and its not spose 2 be in lakes?
bout 5 yrs ago my husband and my brother put 6x6inch plant which came from my brothers freshwater aquarium and by googleing pictures i think it may be a progressed giant form of microsword and since then it has now umm well taken over our entire lake and this lake isnt just ours its a strip pit and has bout 6 other neighboors w/ docks on it, there is fish and other wildlife in and around the lake and it is also our water source...we didnt kno planting that would cause i mass takeover we figured it would give fish places to hide since it was so small of a plant at the time im not sure that its micro sword but it looks alot like it our neighboors do not kno that we put this here and if they did they'd kill us it is starting to "shed" and now all along the banks and the docks dead algea covered leaves are collecting, were dont kno how to kill it and we need to kno how its ok if we cant drink that water for a limited amount of time but we do not want to kill the wild life how do we kill this stuff..i mentioned bringing up treating the lake at the next lake meeting. It also seems like its only growing in sunny spots by observation we noticed that.. the only bonus out of this ordeal is that the fish are much more abundent, perticulary around my dock..hmm wonder why
Resolved Question: what freshwater aquarium fish are taken from the wild ?
Resolved Question: I caught a fish and I want to keep it but don't know what it is or what it needs. What do I do?
I have a kinda small tank (not super small but sorta) and I keep in it lake fish (mosquito fish and molly) because they live longer then fish that I buy at the pet store and are more hardy. All my fish I caught myself from a lake and they have lived a long time. I have have in it all the same conditions these same fish have in the wild (even the plants that I got from the same lake I got the fish from). I recently went back to catch more fish and caught a larger fish that I don't know what it is (when I say large I men larger then mosquito fish but still very small). I kept it and put it in my tank and figured since it was in the exact same place as the mosquito fish that it would need the same thing. My only fear is that since its bigger that it eats my current fish. Its mouth is too small but I don't know if its just young. It is a freshwater fish that I caught in mid-Florida. Its mouth curves down and stops before it's eye. It has a darkly colored dot behind the eye and above the fin. It's body slopes down around it's forehead and gets really skinny near the tail and the tail is parted. From the side it looks more like a circle or oval but from the front it's really skinny. It's top fin in the front is down and in the back is up. It has a squiggly blue design that almost lights up under the aquarium light. It was caught hanging around at the bottom of of shallow water in Florida in the month of june. It looks kinda like a redear sunfish or a blue gill. I named it mystery. Do you know what this fish is and if I can keep it ---that is a video of this fish. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-nmBE9ofSM
Resolved Question: Freshwater bream basics?
I was planning on catching some type of freshwater bream in the near future to put in my 55 gallon aquarium. I am hoping to keep at least 2 of them together. I am planning on catching them with a small hook or a minnow trap. I know for sure that there are perch, and bluegill in the lake but im sure that there are other kinds. I live near Memphis, TN if you need to know. Im not in a hurry the tank isn't even down from the attic yet. By the way I do know a lot about other aquarium fish just not keeping wild fish in aquariums. 1. Do you know any alternative ways to catch them? 2. Are they very hard to take care of (such as maintaining the odor and keeping the tank clean)? 3. What type do you recommend getting? 4. What should I feed them? (I know about worms and feeder fish.) 5. Are there any special things that I need? (I know about an aerator.) 6. How many can I put in the tank? 7. Can I or should I put any more fish in with them? 8. How big do the fish grow while in captivity? 9. Is there any certain disease that lake fish have that I should be concerned about? 10. Is there anything else that I should be concerned about? Thank you lots if you answer even 1 of my questions. John- Thanks for the info but sunfish are actually a type of bream instead of the other way around. Most people usually do call them sunfish though. The green sunfish that you are referring to I believe is the same thing as a blue gill. Thanks a lot for the other info though. More than likely I am going to catch some small bluegills in a home made bait trap. Thanks for the tips.
Resolved Question: What fish to pick...
I have a 37 gallon tank I am cycling......I know it Will be freshwater, and I know I will have angelfish in there.I want to know good tank mates for angels, that they would live with in the wild. OTHER than tetras, which I always find nippy and would not like to risk my angels fins. What fish can they live with in an aquarium and what fish do they live with in the wild? I meant other that tetras. I do not want any nippy fish. I heard livebearers can go well with them, but I think they look to man made, not natral. Would a dwarf gourami go good? Or some kuhli loaches?
