Resolved Question: Difference in maintaining a saltwater aquarium and a freshwater aquarium?
Mon, 02 Apr 2007 22:55:05 GMT
What is the difference in maintaining a freshwater tank and a saltwater tank? I currently have a freshwater 20 gallon tank and in 4 months I am buying a 90 gallon tank. Right now I enjoy taking care of it, and I'm considering switching to saltwater when I get the 90 gallon. I hear from some people its A LOT more work than freshwater and then i also hear its not at all. Someone please help me make a decision! =)
**I plan on having a fish only tank.

i have about 26 guppies (11) and swordtails (15) that i raised there is a local fish store that will accept a dozen for about two dollars. is this a good deal? i think its a rip-off. but i want my tank to have african cichlids.
2nd question:
how hard is it to maintain a saltwater aquarium? is it hard to switch from freshwater to saltwater. what things do i need to have to keep a saltwater aquarium?
third question:

please honest and sincere answers.
Resolved Question: What else do I need to start a salt water aquarium?
Tue, 08 Dec 2009 23:34:09 GMT
I would like some personal product recommendations. I currently have a 5 gallon freshwater aquarium with an aqua tech filter. I replaced the light that came with the tank and now have a 10 watt 50/50 Coralife mini compact fluorescent light. I want to switch my tank over so that I can have a mini coral reef and maybe a clown fish or one-two small fish. What products would you say I need to switch this tank to saltwater? Any thing from sand/substrate to salt brand.

I currently have a 40 gallon freshwater aquarium, but I am considering switching over to saltwater. I need to know what supplies and equipment I am going to need to purchase to make this switch. Here is a list of what I currently have:
305 Fluval Canister Filter
Heater
Air Pump
I need to know what else I need to purchase and approximate prices. Basically any advice on saltwater aquariums. Thank you so much!
Resolved Question: Saltwater fish tank ideas?
Fri, 07 Aug 2009 00:52:49 GMT
OK... Let start off with some background information. I have had a successful freshwater tank for a few years now, and my fish have now all passed. I will be switching over to saltwater soon, and have done quite a bit of research online, at specialty stores (Greenwich Aquaria and House of Fins), and independently. I am going to make it a FOWLR tank. I have the Aquaclear filter from my freshwater tank. In this 20 gallon tank, I will use a live sand substrate, and will have around 8-10 pounds of live rock. (This is what the specialist at Greenwich Aquaria suggested). I will mix the salt in with the water tomorrow hopefully, and have it cycle for 24 hours until I add the live rock and sand. Then, I plan on having that cycle for at least a week until I add the fish... which brings me to the point of all this.
Should I get a pair of Ocellaris Clownfish, a few damselfish, or a few cardinals??
PS: These are the fish the specialist suggested.
As I'm doing more research, I still seem to be confused on how I should plan things. How long should I let the tank cycle with the live sand, live rock, and filter on??
I know it is fully cycled when the nitrate level reaches zero... anything else I should know??

Resolved Question: Switching From Saltwater To Freshwater, Should I Keep The Sump?
Tue, 16 Jun 2009 17:47:26 GMT
I have a 65 gallon saltwater tank that we are turning into a freshwater because we dont have the time or money for the saltwater anymore.
My question is, should I keep the sump?
Im not sure what kind of sump it is but the water spills over this big black thing in the corner and then goes down into the sump and then its pumped back up into the aquarium.
Pros and Cons would be nice! Thanks.
