Resolved Question: EMERGENCY HELP NEEDED for Freshwater Snowflake Eel !!!?
I've had my Snowflake eel for almost a month now. I got him on Aug. 10 from a pet shop about 45 minutes away from my hometown. He is approx. 16 inches long (if not a little longer than that!) He has been doing fine in his tank for the past month. He lives in a 55 gallon aquarium with a Pleco. and two large Oscars (one albino and one tiger). The eel spends the majority of his time in a large log in the bottom of the tank and doesn't seem to have any problems co-existing with his tankmates. I've been feeding him ghost shrimp from a local pet store, popcorn shrimp from the deli at Wal-Mart, and some earthworms. I don't know for sure that he's even eating any of these things because neither I nor my husband have witnessed him eating. He usually spends his time in the log and comes out and swims around on occasion, but this morning when I left for work, he was laying kind of on his side. He was still breathing, and moving, but he wasn't his normal self. I'd appreciate any advice!
Yeah, I'm sure he's a freshwater eel. I made sure of that before I purchased him. I've also Googled freshwater eels and saw one that looks like mine. The tank has Freshwater salt added also.

Resolved Question: Questions About A Saltwater Fish Tank?
I have a lot of questions so bear with me and try to answer as many as you can.
To start off, I have two tanks that I am considering to convert, a 46 gallon and a 10 gallon tank. In the 10 gallon I would obviously start a nano tank with maybe coral, live rock, the inverts that come along with it and maybe an clown fish or two. In the 46, I would obviously go a bit bigger, but I'm looking at a limited budget, which means no luxury non-essentials to start off with. In the 46 I would be looking at live rock, possibility of corals, around 5 fish, obviously the inverts with the rock, and maybe even a Snowflake Eel. I don't need help with the compatibility nor do I want answers that tell me "THAT IS WAY TOO OVERSTOCKED" I have several Freshwater aquariums, I know the drill. What I need to know is:
*Is the nano tank less expensive?
*What additional items are needed besides filter, heater, thermometer, aeration equipment, lights, salt mix, a hydrometer, and a test kit?
*Will I need a quarantine tank?
*What extra care do corals require?
*If I go with corals, should I add fish before or after?
*Should I skip corals altogether until I am more experienced with marine fish?
Please give me some real answers and don't try and lecture me thinking that I'm ignorant and don't know what I'm doing. I've done a lot of research, I'm willing to do the work, and I do have a lot of experience.
Thank you both Graham R and Miss Marlboro as you both answered my questions very well. I think, only because of the budget, I am going to stick with a small nano tank as a FOWLR and not add corals for right now. I don't think I have the time, money, lights or patience for them right now, but I will probably try it sometime. So maybe I'll just buy the live rock for the ten gallon (about 10 lbs. right?), two clownfish, and a powerhead and protein skimmer. With that I think I'll have my hands full so I don't know if coral is the best for now.
Resolved Question: What do I need for a saltwater tank?
Well i am getting a 60-75 gallon aquarium soon and i want to get a snowflake eel. Everywhere says that min. is 50 gallons so i think im good. I was hoping I could get a list of other things I will need. I have a freshwater, but never had saltwater. Also could you tell me what the other things do. Like whats a protein skimmer? different kinds of filters?
Voting Question: How to care for a snowflake eel?
I am thinking of buying a snowflake eel (Or any other good pet eel). I have never owned a saltwater aquarium, but I can handle one I'm sure. I have owned numerous types of freshwater fish though. I would love any information you can give me! Thanks!
Such as:
What they eat/how often
Can I keep other fish too/what kinds
what size aquarium
How can i set up the tank before I buy the eel
Resolved Question: Whats a good freshwater fish that will burrow in sand?
I recently setup a new aquarium with sand as the substrate. I want a fish that will burrow in the sand and help keep it aerated. So far I'm thinking I will get 2 or 3 spiny eels (peacocks and/or zigzags), I like how they burrow and keep their head above sand, but what would be some other options. I also already have 2 yoyo and 2 zebra loaches among others helping mix up the sand.
Here are other burrowers I can think of:
Goby Dragon - Too ugly
Freshwater Snowflake Moray - Too big
Snails - Will get eaten quickly by the loaches
Which would burrow and dig around in the sand more, peacock eels or kuhli loaches?
Resolved Question: Can I keep an octopus in a 55 gallon aquarium?
Not only that but can I keep it with a Snowflake Eel... I want to convert my tank from freshwater to Saltwater and want an exotic animal... Please help
