Resolved Question: 20 gallon tank too hot?
Yesterday, I purchased my first aquarium from PetSmart. It is a top fin 20 gallon tank that came in a starter kit with a filter, chemical conditioning, ect. I set the tank up easily, conditioned the water, added the gravel and decorations and put in the thermometer that came with it. I ran the tank through the night with the light off. Now the thermometer which is a thin plastic one that lights up numbers in multiples of 2 depending on the temperature. When I checked it the numbers 80,82,84 where all lit. From what I've read, for freshwater tanks it should be anywhere from 72-80F. The tank is near a window, which is always closed a no light gets through, a ceiling fan that runs fairly fast, and an air conditioning vent. I live in Texas where it gets very hot during the summertime like this, but I guess I just need to know how to cool it down and keep it cool. By the way, when I do get fish I plan on getting a rubber lip pleco, a ghost shrimp, a mystery snail and maybe one other fish. Also should I probably go buy a new thermometer because this one is kind of a cheapie. Thanks in advance :)
Oh and I'm not using a heater because I was told not to by the person at PetSmart because of the already high temperature.
Okay thanks for all the answers, I got a new thermometer and it turns out the temp is at 79, so the old thermometer must have just been crappy :)
Voting Question: Is it safe to put lawn ornaments such as a lawn gnome in a fish aquarium?
I have a 40 gallon freshwater tropical aquarium and its just looking boring, so i was wondering if it is safe to put things like a lawn gnome or a ceramic turtle in there. I wasnt sure if there is something special about the decorations you can buy at the petstore that makes then safe to go in , or if the other things would be safe. Obviously i would clean them first like anything else that would go in the tank!
Voting Question: Freshwater fish in 5 gallon tank?
what sorts of fish should i get for my 5 gallon tank?
also can i use aquarium salt for neon tetras?
i wanted to get 6 of them...
i bought the salt an hour ago and found out that they dont like it...
is it safe to use like half the dosage or what?
i dont want to waste 6 bucks
i could have paid fo 2 tetras for that!
but doesnt mean im getting neons, i just kind of wanted them
what would be good for the 5g tank?
i already have a betta
im tired of it
i spent money on a filter, which cant even be used with the betta, cause its too strong
and i bought an amazing 30 dollar PLASTIC plant
and yes, it damaged my betta
i want new fish, im giving my betta away
i dont understand
petcetera keeps like over 10 tetra's in like a 2 gallon tank
why cant i put 6 in my 5?
its only 1 over the thumb rule
and they look soooo tiny
but no one answered my other question
CAN AQUARIUM SALT BE USED WITH NEON TETRAS? cause if not ill just return it
Resolved Question: Fish tank with no lid?
I've recently set up a 10 gallon freshwater aquarium. I have not bought the fish or anything yet. Today i realized that the lid of the tank doesn't have a cut out where the filter can be. So i was wondering if the tank, and fish when i get them would be ok with no top to the tank. I'm gonna rig a light fixture some how. and I do not really have money for a new lid. They cost around $50 at the local pet stores here. Thank you ahead of time. i was just wanting to know before i spent to much money and then my fish become un healthy or something.
Voting Question: Sand or gravel? (20 gallon tank)?
Okay so I am buying a 20 gallon fish tank, I plan on getting a few guppies and maybe 2 or 3 ghost or cherry shrimp.
So yes is is a freshwater aquarium, but anyways would sand or gravel be better for this kind of tank?
Also which is cheaper?
I have a bit of a low budget for fish stuff at the moment until I get a job after the move.
Resolved Question: What the heck is a sump?
Okay I'm want to start a saltwater aquarium, and now that I've mastered the art of freshwater fish keeping I figure I might as well do it now. I have a 125 gal fresh tank and a 55 gal and 35 gal that are both empty (upgrades, upgrades haha) So before I even buy the live rock or sand I'm making sure I've done all the research humanly possible... I've figured out that I can use the 55 as the main tank and the 30 as a refugium( I finally got my head wrapped around hat concept)... But the sump still blows my mind... What does it do? Why do I need it? DO I need it? How do I install it? How do I keep it up?
Any and all answers(that are civil) will be immensely appreciated.
P.S. I know the refugium is a great place for copepods to culture, but how do you know that some will get sucked into the main tank?
Voting Question: Salt for freshwater aquarium?
