Resolved Question: 20 gallon tank too hot?
Yesterday, I purchased my first aquarium from PetSmart. It is a top fin 20 gallon tank that came in a starter kit with a filter, chemical conditioning, ect. I set the tank up easily, conditioned the water, added the gravel and decorations and put in the thermometer that came with it. I ran the tank through the night with the light off. Now the thermometer which is a thin plastic one that lights up numbers in multiples of 2 depending on the temperature. When I checked it the numbers 80,82,84 where all lit. From what I've read, for freshwater tanks it should be anywhere from 72-80F. The tank is near a window, which is always closed a no light gets through, a ceiling fan that runs fairly fast, and an air conditioning vent. I live in Texas where it gets very hot during the summertime like this, but I guess I just need to know how to cool it down and keep it cool. By the way, when I do get fish I plan on getting a rubber lip pleco, a ghost shrimp, a mystery snail and maybe one other fish. Also should I probably go buy a new thermometer because this one is kind of a cheapie. Thanks in advance :) Oh and I'm not using a heater because I was told not to by the person at PetSmart because of the already high temperature. Okay thanks for all the answers, I got a new thermometer and it turns out the temp is at 79, so the old thermometer must have just been crappy :)
Resolved Question: Starting a saltwater fish tank?
I have a fully cycled 29 gallon freshwater fish tank and everything i need for a freshwater tank, i want to switch to saltwater fish tank. Can i keep my cycled water? and just put salt in. What equiptment do i need to have a saltwater aquarium. and do i need live rock?
Voting Question: I have a few questions...What type of fish fish can get along with a betta?
1. What type of fish fish can get along with a betta? I hear that the males are more aggressive than the females...soo...Can the females get on well with more types of fish? (In particular, I want to know if they get along with different types of tetras & glassfish, as that's what's in the tank now.) I don't want the betta to go after them or anything. 2. I had a betta about four years ago and he only lived about a year and a half...Then his whole body puffed like a balloon and a few days after, he died. ): So, my question is, what was wrong with him? 3. Can you give me some suggestions for non-agressive, small freshwater fish (Ones that can get along with a couple tetras and glass catfish.) Also, I have a 20 gallon tank...So, yeah, the smaller, the better. 4. What will happen if you have more than inch of fish per gallon? A friend of mine has a huge oscar in a 10gal tank....I feel bad for him, but he's lived in there for two years, no problems. So, what is the absolute maxumum that you can have in a 20gal? 5.How hard is it to maintain a saltwater aquarium? You don't have to answer all of my questions, of course! Just answer one or two and I'll be happy. Thanks! By the way, everyone in the Y!A fish section is really knowledgable, it's amazing. @_@ Argh! I forgot! I also have a crayfish! Will they get along with aquarium frogs or newts or larger varieties of shrimp? Also...(Argh! I have too many questions!)I'm interested in getting a mudskipper. They're just so cute.
Resolved Question: Aquarium help: under water frogs, hermit crabs, and freshwater fish?

Also, can under water hermit crabs and or frogs live in the same tank as fish? What kind of fish can live them if any? Could you put underwater hermit crabs with frogs, also? THANKs!
Resolved Question: What freshwater fish can live with AQUARIUM salt in the water?

Resolved Question: Will these fish live well together?
My boyfriend and I are starting our first fish tank. It is 15 gallons with a light, heater, filter, air pump. We are looking to get about 5 fish.
