I know which fish are aggressive and that's not the problem, the problem is about the pH level and the temperature, I don't know what fish can mix with each other. I would like to keep a community tank and these are the following fish I would like to keep: Neon Tetra or Green Neon Tetra (Well any Tetra that has got colour.) Black-Winged Hatchet Fish and a Catfish that is'nt to big ( 9cm or 10cm smallest.) So could you just tell me if they mix and if they don't tell what fish mix with the fish i've chose. And could you tell me what the name of that yellow Catfish, i've seen it around and it's beutifull and could you tell me if I could keep a Freshwater Snail please, and what type! Sorry, but I don't have a clue!

I recently had a heater malfunction that spiked my temperature to 110° and killed all the fish in my 10-gallon freshwater aquarium. I removed the fish, and cut all power to the tank (lights, air pump for sponge filter, heater) for about two days. Then today I did a 95% water change, and put power back, so my sponge filter and heater are both running now (left lights off for the time being). My tank is currently at 78°F. Is my biofilter dead, or will it have survived two days just fine?

I have an aquarium with platies, just platies. Theres a red platy who I'm particularly fond of - always first to the food, first to explore. I noticed a bit of bullying going on where the largest male Sunset Fire Platy would occasionally chase the Red Platy around the tank. I would sit there for ages and observe them but I never saw nipping and the Red Platy was always quick to find a temporary hiding spot amongst my underwater structures. Recently, within a couple of days, I noticed one of the fins and the tail of the Red Platy were whitish at the tips and quite frayed. Fearing fin rot, I added medication to the aquarium water. Within hours, the Red Platy's condition drastically worsened. The tail had almost completely rotted away. What was left of the tail and the end of its body had turned snow white in contrast to its natural tomato red coloring. Concerned, I then took the step of adding salt to the freshwater aquarium as suggested by many online sources to combat parasites and infections and such. While my other fish thrived, the Red Platy now sits on the bottom of the tank unmoving. Now and again it will swim to another area of the tank for a new place to sit but once it has reached its destination it will not move for a while again, even if I threaten it by tapping lightly on the glass nearby. It would not even go after food unless the food drifted within an inch of it. Even then, the Red Platy has to work very hard to swim. Before I put in the medication, I had tested Nitrate, Nitrite, Chlorine, Hardness, and pH. All were within safe/preferred parameters. The temperature of the tank starts at 75 in the morning and rises to 82 by nightfall. Is there anything else I can do? The Red Platys condition is only worsening. I haven't even filtered out the medication in the water or anything. All of the other fish are completely unaffected and leave the dying fish alone.

I'm starting a 2.65 gallon tank. I'm doing it completely from scratch (i.e. no bacteria from an established tank or adding pure ammonia) and am going to add the betta in during cycling. I've tested the water for only two days. I'm using the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Freshwater Master Test Kit and the only product I've added to the water was Aquarium Pharmaceuticals' Betta Water Conditioner. On day one (yesterday), my readings were as follows: pH = 7.4 - 7.6, ammonia = 0.25 ppm, nitrites = 0 ppm, nitrates = 0 ppm, temperature = 78 - 80*F. On day two (today), my readings had changed: pH = 7.2 - 7.4, ammonia = 0.50 ppm, nitrites = 0 ppm, nitrates = 5.0 ppm, temperature = 78 - 80*F. It is possible, though, that I misread what color the tubes actually were on the first day and that today has my actual results. Should I only be worried about the ammonia? Would it be ok to get the betta today and add him to the tank or should I wait?

I realize that some may get too big I realize I can go to a fish store and get cooler looking fish I realize there may be laws against it I would just like to know what I need to do to get the fish adjusted to their new water or if it will work at all. Like what foods and what temperature would the tank need to be. I am only talking about a couple fish that I know won't grow too large. Just help me if you know anything about the subject please.

I set up a freshwater aquarium and the water temperature is to high how do i lower it.

I have a mature female and male betta together in a 5 gallon aquarium with 6 inches of water. The female showed stripes when I put her in a jar in the tank so this morning (6/11/10) I let them in together. The female's fins are ripped and she appears stressed, but I know a little bit of bullying is to be expected. The temperature is 80 degrees. I conditioned the fish with baby shrimp and regular betta food. I'm using a Tetra brand betta water stabilizer and freshwater salt and changing a little water every day, and he has a very nice sized nest. The female appears to maybe be giving in because when the male comes up to her she doesn't just dart away she lays on her side a little or puts her head down but he still bites her. This is their first time breeding so I kind of wonder if he might kill her before he gets the hang of it.
