Resolved Question: A blue lobster as a pet?
Let me start of by saying I know very little about lobsters as pets. I have several pets, and have been tossing around the idea of getting some critters to put into a ten-gallon tank my sliders are about to outgrow.
I work at a pet supply store (small-scale, nothing hideous involving poorly kept animals) which only sales aquarium creatures like fish, coral, reef, lobsters, shrimp, etc.
There is actually only one lobster there, and he's been there for at least a week or two. I believe he's freshwater, about the length of an average hand, and he's blue. I don't know much about him and haven't had much time to talk to my colleague who operates that section of the store. Does anyone know what kind of lobster he may be, and could you perhaps direct me to some places to do some research on the little guy?
Thanks.
Resolved Question: Freshwater fish and living conditions, are we doing too much?
Hello,
My question is with regards to fish and conditions of living. I have always been intrigued by the living conditions that pet shop provide to freshwater fish on sale. I’m not a resident of the United States. Pet shops in my country provide the minimum acceptable living conditions to their fish, no soaking of pellets before feeding, water changes only once a month and overstocked and dirty aquarium. Yet, I’ve observed that all the different varieties of fish even the supposedly more sensitive ones such as dicus which requires clean water stay in good health for a long time. I mean they look healthy, their fins are not clamped etc. We aquarists have always been taught that we should do regular weekly water changes and take many steps to keep our goldfish healthy and prevent diseases. So how come, the goldfish at the pet store apparently do not get sick for such a long time.
In spite I try as far as I can to provide good living conditions for my goldfish, they always get sick. The fish I bought got sick, I tried to cure it but in vain. I don’t understand where the problem is, should I perform less water changes as the pet shop.
Are we exaggerating when we strive to provide optimum water conditions to our pet fish and thereby diminishing their resistance to pathogens.
Resolved Question: How deadly are nitrites to freshwater fish?
I "saved" 4 goldies from being flushed after a kid won them from a carnival and couldn't keep them. I was brand knew and went to the shop, bought a 10 gallon on sale, a whisper filter, and an aerator.
After the first died, I learned about water conditioning and the tank cycle.
Now the others seem to be dieing off, so I took a water sample to a LCS, they said salt (aquarium salt, about 1.5 Tbspn for the 10 gallon tank), ammonia, and nitrate levels were fine, but my nitrites were pretty high. I do weekly 20% water changes with conditioned water that sits for 24 hours+ first.
How deadly are high nitrites to freshwater fish? Another one passed today!
Resolved Question: Too much ammonia in freshwater fish tank?
Ok I have a 25 or 30 gallon freshwater tank about...oh..a week and a half old. Bought it at a yard sale, brought it home, cleaned it really well with this aquarium cleaner bought at my local pet store. With the tank came 3 south african cichlids. Well, in the moving process, 2 of them died from stress or whatever so I went and bought more fish
We now have 2 south african cichlids, 2 blue channel cat fish and an algae fish. The fish store said that since cichlids are aggressive, these fish can live with them.
Anyhow, one of the blue channel catfish died yesterday, took its body and a sample of the water to my local pet store and the amonia level was at 6...when its supposed to be at zero. So, I did a 50% water change and took out the fake plant things that had all kinds of yuck on them (we bought them new as well). So I'm not sure why the ammonia is so high. I have something called Ammonia tabs and also have nitrate tabs...unsure how to use them. But when I added new water, I added aquarium salt with it. Water is still cloudy though so I added some of that clear additive stuff. Anyhow, I'm tired of dead fish already, just want them to be healthy. Can someone help me out?
Resolved Question: Is it ich or is it some other disease?
One of my mollies (out of 3 mollies, 1 platy, and 1 catfish) (and my tank is fine, water is great and all) has this growing white spot that is on his scales and it turning them white. It has been there for maybe 4 weeks or so, but I thought it was just normal so I let it go until about a week ago when I tried to cure it. I got some ich treatment, and started it yesterday, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything at all! That's the only spot he has, and none of the others have it. There is no fibers coming out of it, just white, deadish looking scales.

Any help is great (the ich med was only $5 and I'll probably need it in the future so no biggy if I need something else) (it was on sale).
Resolved Question: What is the difference between a green spotted puffer and a green puffer?
I just bought a puffer but am not sure what the difference is. I know it is a lg puffer and the sales guy said that it is a "true" freshwater fish? I have no clue what the differce is.
also how long should I wait to pop him into an aquarium with my hubbies albino frogs?
Resolved Question: Saltwater Aquarium?
Around Christmas or next year I am planning on getting a saltwater aquarium. I have had freshwater aquariums for a few years. I think I'm ready to move on to bigger and better tanks.
Do you have any suggestions as far as what kind of fish I could put in a 30 gallon aquarium? What kind of coral or algea-eating fish could I have? I'd like some Clowns, Crabs, Shrimp, Lobster, Clams, Coral, Eels (maybe), and lots more!! I know of an octopous that can get to only 3" that I found for sale online! I think I could get a few.
Don't judge by the size on the aquarium please, as I might get a 130 gallon aquarium. I'm very excited so please don't rude my joy. :)
