Resolved Question: How do I keep the water in my 55 gallon fish tank balanced?
I recently got a 55 gallon freshwater tank. After reading up some starter suggestions I followed through with cycling the tank for 1 week without any livestock in it. The following week I added 12 baby white clouds to get some bacteria going. Another week later I added two Molly's, and that's when my trouble started. One of the Molly's has already died, the other one seems sick too, kinda floating at a 45 degree angle but still swims around. I'm doing 20-30% water changes once a week, and always add some AquaSafe and EasyBalance at the amounts indicated on the bottles. I also add some all natural Aquarium Salt for freshwater fish. The problem seems to be my ammonia level, it gets down to "safe" right after I change the water, never down to "ideal" though, but after just a few days it's all the way up to "critical" again. What can I do to best keep my water balanced and the fish alive? By the way, the White Clouds seem to be doing absolutely fine. Oh, and we have a frog in there as well, just tiny little one. Any suggestions are much appreciated.
Resolved Question: Live plants in water?
Very new to the real aquarium world but I am making substantial bounds in my learning. Fake one being just putting fish in a bowl(aquarium) and hoping for the best. Just now really got the whole cycling process down and have a really good freshwater aquarium right now. Four neons and a small frog. So now I have a few questions about live plants in my tank/future larger tanks. What are good starter plants? What kind of plants do well in gravel/low light? Do plants, besides dead/decaying parts, give off harmful chemicals that will hurt my tank? Basically if I have good upkeep on the plants will they naturally hurt my tank/fish? On top of this, if there are any advice/tips for live plants in freshwater tanks just let me know. Thanks everyone for all the help I have been receiving.
Resolved Question: How to start a small marine aquarium?
I have had and maintained many freshwater tropical aquariums over the years. I have a left over 10 gallon tank and I am in love with the marine fish at my local fish store. I was wondering first of all if a 10 gallon is good for a marine beginner aquarium, or if I should go a little bigger to a 20? How many fish/inverts could I use in a 10 gallon or a 20gallon? Since I don't know much about it, I was most likely not going to do a live rock or coral reef aquarium is that a good plan? Any advice on what I should do as a starter. I know I would probably get a new bulb for the old hood on the 10 gallon if I used that alone with a new filter system and I already have a heater for it or has technology changed much with heaters that I should get a new one? My dad had a 30 gallon marine back in college so I'm sure he could remember some things but I'd like to hear from the experts on here. Let me know all you can please! I've learned of a few well known and established saltwater aquarium specialist stores near me. They both offer set-up services for my tank so I am going to one of them today to talk with an expert and see how much it would cost for something like that. They also offer maintainance which they would come to your house and perform on a regular basis or could customize it to your aquariums needs.
Resolved Question: What's the hardiest fish to start a freshwater tank?
I know i'm supposed to "cycle" my tank for a week, but I'm sooo anxious to get one little fishy in there. It's cycled for about a day now, and I'm wondering what the BEST STARTER FISH would be to prematurely cycle my tank with? also, I'll probably end up waiting on the full week cycle before adding fish, I'm just so anxious to see a fish swimming in our new aquarium.
Resolved Question: Saltwater Aquarium Questions?
Ok i need all of your personal opinions. I have just recently found a 45 gallon tall aquarium and its light hood, but that's it. Now i was wanting to make that a saltwater, but the cost of a filter, heater, protein skimmer, sand, rock, test kits, powerheads, fish and lighting, etc. would be so much money for me to spend (considering im still a teen). So now for my question, should i just make my 45 gal. tank a freshwater because i have two gsp's in a very small tank, so should i upgrade them to the 45 and just buy one of those Instant Ocean Saltwater aquarium starter kits? What is the biggest size they come in? the biggest i've seen was a 29 gal. and if i buy one will anything else need to be added? PLEASE ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS it will only be a FO or FOWLR...no coral
Resolved Question: Question about cycling and ammonia!?
My tank still has 0.5 ppm ammonia despite me conducting a 30% water change this afternoon. However, my tank is NOT completely cycled and is in the process of cycling. I have added Stress-Zyme in order to boost the cycle and make it faster. However, under the "Starting the Nitrogen Cycle" section of the book "Freshwater Aquariums for Dummies", it says "About 2 weeks after you add starter fish to your aquarium, the ammonia build-up in your tank begins to peak.........You're probably wondering what to do with the ammonia, right? Well, just sit back, because your friendly neighborhood bacteria will take care of everything." Is the last sentence of that paragraph "....Your friendly neighborhood bacteria will take care of everything" true? So if it is, that means I've been conducting all these 30% water changes and adding Ammo-Lock for nothing? But if I don't do anything, won't the ammonia become dangerously high? Please answer the questions for me because I really am lost between the text of the guide and my instincts... I forgot to say that this is NOT a fishless cycle, I have blood parrot cichlids. To the first answerer: What do you mean by "let your biological filter catch up"?
Resolved Question: For tank enthusiast - Which might be easier for starters (marine or freshwater)?
Which might be easier when starting an aquarium collection? Marine (Saltwater) or Freshwater fish? Although Marine fish are more expensive, I'd be welling to shell out the extra buck, many of them are beautiful fish! But, I've had a freshwater aquarium before so I'm more familiar with those types fish, but not much as I was younger. Which would you consider more pleasant? Which are easier to buy at your local pet store if I decided to just stop one day from work and buy a few fish to add to the aquarium? Which might be easier to find tank 'cleaners' for such as those fish at the bottom of the tank? And anything you might find I'd need to know.
