Ok I have a 25 or 30 gallon freshwater tank about...oh..a week and a half old. Bought it at a yard sale, brought it home, cleaned it really well with this aquarium cleaner bought at my local pet store. With the tank came 3 south african cichlids. Well, in the moving process, 2 of them died from stress or whatever so I went and bought more fish We now have 2 south african cichlids, 2 blue channel cat fish and an algae fish. The fish store said that since cichlids are aggressive, these fish can live with them. Anyhow, one of the blue channel catfish died yesterday, took its body and a sample of the water to my local pet store and the amonia level was at 6...when its supposed to be at zero. So, I did a 50% water change and took out the fake plant things that had all kinds of yuck on them (we bought them new as well). So I'm not sure why the ammonia is so high. I have something called Ammonia tabs and also have nitrate tabs...unsure how to use them. But when I added new water, I added aquarium salt with it. Water is still cloudy though so I added some of that clear additive stuff. Anyhow, I'm tired of dead fish already, just want them to be healthy. Can someone help me out?

I have a 30 gal tank that Ive had for about 2 yrs, plus Ive had it set up with other fish in the past, and Id consider myself fairly fish knowledgeable, but I have never had anything like this happen before. within the last 7-10 days I have lost about 10 fish, most of them have died in the last 5 days. I only have 8 fish left. I have had guppies, tetras (cardinal & neon) & a blue paradise dwarf gourami. the temp is set at a consistent 73 degrees, I have an ammonia and pH monitor visible inside the tank, plus I tested with my API kits for pH, ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites, and everything was 100% normal. the only thing that is different, is after my last water change, I bought some new fish. a goldfish, an oto, a couple guppies, and some rummynose tetras. probably too many fish to add at once & overall the tank would be considered overstocked, but I tend to do that and make up for it with more frequent water changes. I have managed my tanks this way for years and never had any probs, plus I dont think this would cause the rapid deaths I am having. the rummynose were the first to start dying. lost 2 of the 3 about 5 days after I bought them, a couple days apart. then within the last week or so I have lost 5 of my cardinal/neon tetras, my hardy as hell gourami died yesterday, now today my goldfish is acting just like the gourami did before he croaked yesterday, and 2 or 3 guppies have died. I have 2 live plants in the tank that are thriving, I use aquarium salt and tap water purifier everytime I change my water, I have a heater of appropriate wattage that keeps the temp perfect, I have a power filter that I keep clean and just changed yesterday after doing another water change. and I have a power head to pump oxygen into the tank as well. the only thing I can think of is that the new fish brought some disease, OR the bucket I used to fill with water to put in the tank had some residue of soap or chemical in it (though I dont remember using it for cleaning, as these are my fish-specific buckets). I did about a 50-60% water change yesterday (with a known CLEAN bucket) when I really realized how many fish have died so quickly, and that my gourami was feeling sick, but it doesnt appear to have helped as the gourami died last night, as well as another guppy, and my goldfish that appeared normal yesterday is now having difficulty swimming and staying balanced. I see no sign of fungus or parasites. I did treat with copper safe for a potential worm I saw about 2 months ago. I have no idea what the heck to do/think here. even if I lose all my fish and buy more, I fear any new ones will die as well unless I figure out what the heck is in my tank. any thoughts/advice or referrals to a good book/website is appreciated!!! yes, duh, I know its not recommended to mix goldfish and tropical. the tropical fish I have all prefer/tolerate cooler temps, and Ive had goldfish historically and they are extremely hardy and forgiving fish. I read up on them and found that they are brackish water fish, and my aquarium is a freshwater tank. I have been using aquarium salt made of evaporated sea water, and that seems to have been good enough for my 2 blackfin sharks and molly, I have many other fish besides those, but those require the most salt. Please tell me If my Dragon Goby will do ok, and how much salt should I add to the tank, and how often. Also, if i use a small amount of marine salt, will that hurt my other fish? (Peacock eels, tiger barbs, gold gourami, serpae tetras, platys, upsidedown catfishes) I just called the petstore that I got the Goby from, and he said that the Gobys that they import are bred in captivity, and in freshwater, so after the ammount of breading in freshwater, the Gobys have adapted to the freshwater, and aren't a true brackish water fish. He also said that many pet stores get their fish directly from the wild, and in that case it would need brackish water, but these have been bred in freshwater.

I just started up a saltwater aquarium and so far have been following instructions on the book, but there's no help in what to do if your water foggs up. I put in some rocks (well rinsed) to decorate (not live rocks, but they were purchased at the petshop for an aquarium) , and mixed the salt with water per indications, and added the live sand as the book instructed, and all my other supplies are already up, like the filter, heater, ect. I have no fish yet or any other living creatures, as I'm to wait for the water to cycle first. On the first day of having set up my aquarium, the water was pretty cloudy, which I understand that's normal when you first set up a tank (I have had freshwater fish before and that seems normal until everything settles). The 2nd day it was less cloudy, and by the 3rd day it was pretty clear... however, by the 4th day, it got pretty cloudy again, and now it's even cloudier. Why is this happening and how can I fix it? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks. All the freshwater aquariums I've had in the past stay foggy for only the first few days after setup, but gradually clearing up. Once they clear up, they don't get foggy again like my saltwater is doing.

Hi, I'm doing a lot of research over the internet on how to maintain the cycle of a freshwater aquarium. On 2-15-10 I bought a 55 gallon deluxe kit. Comes with a 55g tank, submersible heater, hood lights, bio filter with some type of bacteria that comes in it and etc. I also bought freshwater salt, stress zyme and coat and added as directed. Right after that my husband decided that it was okay to add my 10 yr old plecostomus fishes in (2 of them) He believed that maybe it would help speed up the cycle.. I kept an eye on them and they seemed stressed at first, but them started acting normal. We do not know much, and this is my first time ever owning a freshwater tank. Today is the 5th day the tank has been setup. Fishes seem okay. And I also added bubble curtain, and live freshwater plants. I also did a 25% water change and added stress zyme, coat, and salt as directed. The reason I did this was because there is white cloudness in the water, which I believe is ammonia? I bought tests kits for ph, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate etc. Everything is great except for the ammonia lvl.. Yesterday I bought the ammonia clear tablets, it says that it will remove ammonia fast. I have not added them in yet, because I don't want to mess up anything, like the cycle.. I was thinking of waiting for the 7th day to do a 25% water change and add these tablets, and the stress zyme which comes with live bacteria which I am to add on the 1st, 7th, and 14th days. Any tips or advice on what to do? I know I must have patience, but I wanted to know if I am doing okay.

I have a 2-3 inch silver tip shark in a freshwater tank because I was told it needed freshwater. I'm going to get a brackish tank, but how long is too long to wait before i put him in? i am using aquarium salt. A few other names are columbian shark, Shark catfish, Bull shark catfish, Black fin shark.

This is my first fish tank (so I'm still learning). It is a 20 gallon freshwater tank. I have had for about a week and a half now. I started with 5 neon tetras(one of which died the next day) and a beta (all not added until after waiting 48 hours of the tank being set up and running). A couple days ago I added 3 platys and 3 mollies. The day after the new fish were in the tank I noticed my beta not eating and hiding under ornaments. This is when I first noticed the whitespots (that I was unaware to even have to look for). The petstore said it was Ick and told me to do a gravel vac and 50% water change, add aquarium salt and turn the heat up slowly to 85 degrees. I did that and today my beta and another tetra were dead. Those 2 had the most spots and seemed the most infected of tank. I noticed that one of my mollies is now developing these whitespots. I went to the petstore again and got jungle ick clear tank buddies (this was about 4 hours ago). My question is...is it too late? Are they all going die? Or do you think I caught it early enough in the other fish, that they will live? One other question...what causes Ick? Because, I was thinking that one or more of my fish had it when I bought them. Thanks!
