Resolved Question: How do you convert a saltwater aquarium to a freshwater aquarium?
I recently purchased an aquarium from somebody that was using it as a saltwater aquarium. It is very dirty and has salt caked all over it. I need to clean off all the algae and salt. Do I just use water and a scrubber or is there more to it? I read somewhere to use vinegar, anyone ever heard of this? Also what is a protein scimmer? The tank came with all types of stuff that I'm not familiar with. Can I keep any of the decor that was in the tank if I rinse it off? Thanks for any advice you can give.
I already have 5 fancy tailed goldfish and 2 small catfish in my other tank that I plan on transferring into this tank. The decor is mostly rocks and fake plants. I removed all of the old gravel because I want to use the rocks that I had in my old tank.
It came with 2 filters a dual bio-wheel and the the one that uses rocks with charcoal. I was planning on keeping the filters and replacing what I can with new stuff. Or can I clean the pads and wheels as well as the casing?
Resolved Question: I'm getting tired of my fish tank. Any ideas of something interesting to put in it?
For years I've had basic freshwater tanks with stuff like neons, platies, swordtails, cories, etc.
I've got a 20 gal. saltwater setup, which I'm not tired of. But I want to do something different with the freshwater tanks we've got.
I've got a 5 gal. tank I'm taking to college with me, and my dad's got a 75 gal. he'd like to do something new with. We've also got a 15 gal. with stuff in our basement.
Anybody got any ideas for cool setups, i.e. special community tanks such as an Amazon setup, pond tank, anything different from the usual that's still interesting? I'm definitely open too for doing something totally different like converting the 75 to a turtle tank, half terrarium with newts or other critters, or anything out of the usual. Just ready for something different, really.
It would be great if anybody knew of a couple good websites that show different setups that can be done with the home aquarium besides your average run of the mill freshwater tank.
Resolved Question: How to shift from a freshwater aquarium to a saltwater aquarium?
I've been an aquarist for a year now. I have 2.5' by 1.5' by 2' tank with about two dozen (don't get alarmed, most of them are barbs!) tropical freshwater fishes. I've grown even more interested in this hobby and would like to convert to a saltwater aquarium, but I have certain doubts.
How much more difficult would it be to maintain a saltwater tank than a freshwater tank? Would I require any new equipment (new= other than filter, heater and air pump)? How much more (or less) variety is there in saltwater fishes as compared to freshwater fishes? How hardy do saltwater fishes tend to be?
And lastly, do you positively think it's worth all the hassle to convert to a saltwater aquarium? I'm not yet very sure myself.
Thanks for your reply!
Resolved Question: Converting from freshawater to saltwater aquarium?
I'm converting my 10gal freshwater aquarium to a saltwater fish only. I have a marinelnd powerfilter, thermometer, heater and light (I will change the bulb to 50/50). I know I will be needing new sand (aragonite) and hydrometer.
My question is, do I still need a protein skimmer? powerhead? or my powerfilter will be enough (he powerfilter is for 20gal, so this is kinda strong for 10gal)?
I know a lot of you would say don't use a 10gal aquarium for saltwater, but this is the only available for me now due to space.
Resolved Question: How do you clean the film off of a used 55 gallon tank? I have tried vinegar and stuff from petsmart.noresults?
This is everything it came with....I think I got a steal. She had it set up for saltwater and then converted it to freshwater. I have a ton of stuff that I don't know how to use! I haven't been successful in getting the python to work either. I can hook it to my spicket (outside) but not my sink but I can't hook the tubing to the sink/spicket attachment. It has a male end on attachment but It is to big and will not thread. Help with that would be great as well. I am getting discouraged. I tried to attach pics but it won't let me. You can look at it on craigslist under SC, then Upstate, the type in fishtank, it is the one that is for 200 and says clemson/anderson for location. The water is very murky looking and maybe that is what the film is. So I am guessing bacteria, fungal, or algae. Please help.....my husband says it is a waste of money and I should have bought a new lens for my camera. But I started this hobby with a 10 gal and I absolutely love it. It is very relaxing to lay on the couch and watch the fish.
Please only aquarium experts or ones with years of exoerience reply!!! I I know you cannot use soap products on tanks.
