i just got a 12 gallon tank and i was planning on getting four fish but it turns out one of them gets too big and another is too aggresive. I need help deciding 3 or 4 fish to get for the tank that are really cool looking or colorful (ex. dwarf gourami, knifefish) but also are reletively small and compatable with most other fish.
and if its possible, could someone also send me a link that has a list of all freshwater fish w/pics cuz ive been searching for hours and havent found one.
thnx for the help!
I manage a pet department, so I have knowledge of aquariums, (not an expert) but I am going to setup a 72 gallon bow front, for freshwater ( I have not purchased yet). I have a list of fish that I would like to add to the community.
I am really interested in BGKs (Black Ghost Knife Fish) and freshwater puffers, but I know that they can both be nippy.
I also realize that puffers (even freshwater) would rather a more brakish water.
Is is possible to house both together?
; ) THANKS
What are some good freshwater fish to get. I've had many fish in the past and have a 20 gal. tank, so i can any kind of fish but i can't decide. Please list several different kinds of fish in your answer. Thnx!

I have an empty 20 gallon aquarium and i am thinking about changing it to salt water. what will i need (list of supplies) i was thinking about getting a pair of clownfish. Would this work do you have any other suggestions in terms of fish? i have lots of experience with freshwater so i understand most concepts. or are there any good websites
I actually saw a post on yahoo answers and it had a link to a useful website that you could plan a freshwater aquarium out. I forgot to bookmark the website :(. You put what size tank you had in and what filters you had on it and then you could select from a huge list of fish and put how many of each you wanted and it would tell you possible issues and stuff to insure a successful tank. Anyone know what I'm talking about or something similar. Can you post a LINK if possible?????? THANKYOU SO MUCH
For my freshwater aquarium (20 gallon) I thought I will keep:
6: Cardinal Tetras
1: Bristlenose Pleco
1: Female Betta
1: Dwarf Gourami
1: Male Guppy
3: Female Guppy
I know the guppies will breed.
If that's to many fish what fish should I get rid of?
I'm going to build a freshwater aquarium all around side glass (will be in the middle of my living room) with common goldfish or neon fish in it with this size (in inches): 70 L x 8 W x 30 H.
Could you please answer to the following questions to remove once at all my permanent doubts ?
1) Which thickness of glass in mm shall I used ? Safety is my first priority as I have two small kids I want the safest glass possible.
2) I heard that plexiglas is stronger than glass especially for big tank like this one, is it right ? I think glass is better to clean than plexiglas.
3) If I am going to put live plant, shall I need a CO2 equipment inside ?
4) Shall I need also a UV STERILIZER PUMP ? If yes, what is it for ?
5) Can the common goldfish and neon fish live in the same tank without problems ?
6) Which equipments shall I buy for ? I was thinking on two in particular, the Eheim 2215 Classic Canister Filter or the Marineland Aquarium Canister Filter C-360, what do you think ?
It would be very help full If you could list exactly the model of each equipment I shall buy for let this aquarium works as best as possible because I am completely new of this and do not know anything yet. Thank you very much and a lot of points for the best expert answers.
My fish are happy and healthy.I think more fish should be in the mix now.I've been thinking about this for a while.Do you think that since I have successfully ran an aquarium for two weeks now, I could get more fish? It's a ten gallon and I already have a list of fish that I think would go nicely in my aquarium.
* ten gallon freshwater
1. 2 Otocinclus catfish
2. 4 neon tetras
*Fish I own right now
1 Dalmation lyretail mollie
Tell me what you think. Thanks bunches for the help!
P.S: What I mean by successfully running an aquarium, is that none of the fish in it have taken a ride on the porcelain express.
Hi, I am thinking about starting a salt water tank. I have had experience in freshwater tanks, and think I am ready to delve into the marine world. I have researched a few saltwater starting kits, and am wondering which one is best. I only have the room for something less than 15 gallons, so I am limited there, but here is what I have come up with...
12 gallon Aquapod
14 gallon oceanic biocube
12 gallon marineland instant ocean saltwater aquarium kit
12 gallon Nanocube
Which one do you think would be best? I know that I have to get a protein skimmer as well. If I end up doing a saltwater tank (after MUCH more research) I am probably going to start out with a fish only tank then maybe move on to corals after I get comfortable with fish. I am thinking of getting some live rock, and if I do a 12 or 14 gallon tank, how much would I need? Also, what would be a good stock list for the 12 or 14 gallon, and what are some good beginner fish and corals? I know I am asking a lot of questions, but this is just the beginning of my research, cause I know that saltwater tanks take a lot more time.
Thanks so much!!
I have a 30 gallon tank and I am going to set up a FOWLR aquarium in it. I love the colours and variation of a marine tank. I have done my reading about live rocks and SW tanks. Now I want some information from experienced people for good tank mates.
I would like ones, first and foremost, that help maintain the tank. In my freshwater tanks, I never see any algae, ever, because of the certain I keep. I don't mind algae in my marine tank becaise I love the colour and I need the biological filter but I want something that can help keep it down to where it needs to be.
I do want a few shoals of fish, if my tank size permits. I know the rule of thumb for a FW tank is "1 gallon for every inch of full-grown fish," but does that rule apply to marine tanks with live rock? Does the live rock take up that space, too?
I love variation. I am a full-time student and a Science major. I just finished a year of Biology and I would want to use my education in Ecology and Limnology. In saying that, I want an ecosystem. I enjoy seeing symbiosis. Clownfish and their host anemones are awesome to me. I want my entire tank to be filled with creatures that dwell with each other and others of different species.
Can anyone give me a good list of what they use or have used? I want anything from sponges to Moorish Idols (I don't mean to list from that one Disney movie, just good fish). The more, the better.
Any advice and anything to watch out for would be graciously accepted. Also, I love anything exotic; the more exotic, the better.
Thank you, in advance.
Ok, I sold my two 20 gallon aquariums and bought two 100 gallons a month ago.
I named my aquariums the "lucky" aquarium and the other the "aggressive" aquarium.
I have 2 young 3" koi in my "lucky" aquarium, and I was thinking of buying two 2" Red Cap Oranda Goldfish and two 2" black, white, and orange Ryukin Goldfish. And maybe two 2" panda orando goldfish. I was thinking of moving my koi to my pond.
Give me a list of freshwater fish that would do great in my "lucky" aquarium and another list of freshwater for my "aggressive" aquarium. (the "aggressive" aquarium is empty.)
thanks:)
Give me a list of all the fish that you would stock in a 30 gallon freshwater aquarium.
I have been keeping freshwater fish for over 6 years, and I feel that I am ready for more of a challenge. I love the marine fish that I have seen in my favorite local pet stores. I have a few wonderful stores that I could go to get fish. The only problem is that I know absulutly nothing about taking care of saltwater. I wouldn't even know where to begin. I have tried to research online, but haven't really found anything too helpful.
What I need to know, is if those of you who own saltwater tanks would recommend them. I know they are more expensive to set up, but how much do they cost to maintain?
If you recommend a saltwater tank, what is the recommend size I should look into? What other addition items will I need?
I have found a few sites that list their recommendations for beginners as far as choosing fish, but I would like to know if you have any suggestions as far as which fish to put in the tank?
Are there any websites that I should be looking at? Any books that I can get?
Any information will be appreciated. I want to make an informed decision before I go out and buy fish I can't take care of!
I currently have ALL freshwater:
-55 gallon(x1)
-30 gallon (x2)
-10 gallon(x2)
-5 gallon(x2)
-2.5 gallon(x1)
I am not looking to convert any of these tanks into saltwater. I know that starting off will be VERY expensive. I have been looking at setups online and in the fish stores. I just don't know how much it will cost to maintain. I don't have another $100 to spend every week. I am not going out tomorrow to get a tank, I am trying to be responsible and gather all the information I can first, and save enough money so I can buy all the right things the first time around.
Thanks for all the great advice to those of you that have already answered. New advice is still greatly desired!
i was wondering what my 55 gallon tank will hold fish wise. i was thinking of this list:
1 elephant nose
1or 2 baby whalefish and a couple of rainbows
1 cory cat
5 jumbo tetras
1 angelfish
or a few discus's and some clown loaches. also where can i find affordable discus's
