Okay, so I'm having problems with my fish. I started my new fish tank about 6 weeks ago (it's a 28 gallon freshwater tank). At the moment I have 3 long finned black skirted tetras, three other type of tetras (I don't know their name- they're orange with black and white), 5 small neons, 2 sunset tequilla male guppies and 1 golden gourami. Just in the past two days another gourami and one molly died. In the past (maybe 3 weeks ago) a different molly and 2 other guppies died (I figured those were just stress deaths, since they died not long after moving into my tank). So now I'm having problems with my fish being sick. Both of the fish that recently died were sick, but I don't know what of. They were very innactive all of the sudden, and were hiding in corners and going around my heater a lot. Also, they barely ate, and they gulped at the water all day. After three days of this they died. So now a few of my other fish are acting this way, and I don't know what sickness they have, so I don't know how to treat them. I've had the usual water balance problems, but now I have nitrites low, ammonia low, and ph is a little high, but not by much. Each week I do a 25% water change, and I have prepared the water in advance. I also have oxygen supplied into their tank, and add aquarium salt on a regular basis. Oh, in case it makes a difference, I have three live plants and two fake plants. I had a moss ball, but I took it out because it was getting too much algae. Please help so I can treat my fish! I add salt because even though it's freshwater, salt keeps fish healthy. It helps their fins stay healthy, and makes the fish more active. Also, I do make sure there is no chlorine in the new water.

i can not find a way to get enough watts per gallon in my 29 gallon freshwater community tank! i plan on turning it into a planted aquarium soon so i need more light.... i have and 18" tubes which i think is 15 watts....i dont want to but whole new light hood thing or watevr....*where are some good places to find compact fleurescent lights for an aquarium?* like one that perches on the side of the aquarium or is a pendent lamp. *also whats a good brand of full spectrum light bulb?* i am also having problems deciding on what fish i should get...i have 4 guppies, 5glolite tetras, 2 shrimp, 1 snail, 1 african dwarf frog, I plan on getting 2-3 Otos to help keep the tank algae-free when i get all the plants. I want teh fish to pretty much all be from south america or mexico(that general area)....*whats another type of fish thats from that area that would look good swimming through driftwood rox and plants?* *also whats a good way to get more filtration in my tank?*

It was about 1 inch long and looked as if it were covered in white bristles or hairs. It was rather hard to pry from the leaf but I was able to get it out of there. I've done some web searching but didn't really find much info. Ever since planting my aquarium with live plants, snails have been an issue--but manageable. However this new creature is a bit of a mystery. Any thoughts? BTW, I have various invertebrates such as algae shrimp which is why I don't use any Kill-A-Snail type products. The rest of my tank is populated with just a shoal of whitecloud minnows.

Hi, My grandad passed away last week, September 25th 2007, and among the things he left behind is his 50 gallon freshwater fish tank. Cleaning this aquarium seemed like his only type of "work" since he had asthma, and could not do strenuous things. I just need help with tips on how to clean it, and what things I should keep/add. I forgot all my steps to cleaning an aquarium and stuff ever since he left, so I just need to be refreshed: Here are some details: 1) 50 Gallon FRESHwater Aquarium 2) Holds about 5 to 6 baby koi and goldfish. 3) Runs on a double Bio-Wheel filter 4) 1 Air Pump with algae in the airstones. 5) Algae is beginning to grow on the walls of the aquarium. 6) Decoration is all plastic and beginning to grow algae. Some of my questions are: 1) What would be the best filtration system for this aquarium setup? 2) Should I get an algae eater? If so, what species? And should I get any other "helper" fish like snails etc. 3) Aeration suggestions? Thank you Some more of my questions is: 1) What "helper fish" should I add to help with the sanitation and the cleanliness of the aquarium? (Snails, etc) Please try and list species 2) What chemicals should I add? The back of my aquarium has green algae. I clean (25% partial water change and scrape the inside walls) the aquarium every week. I have had the aquarium setup for 2 months. I just recently started seeing algae over the past 2 weeks. Last week and the week before the algae was just in small areas, so I just wiped it off with a aquarium sponge. This week it is not thick, but it takes up a good size area on the back wall. How should I best get rid of the algae? Should I get an algae eater, snail, a special type of chemical to put in the water, etc? I am reluctant to getting an algae eater because I don't know if it would eat my fish. I have 7 baby platies in a 10 gallon tank. The platies were all born in March and April. They are about half an inch in size. The aquarium is near a window (where the blinds usually stay closed). The water is clear. The fish get fed every other day and I put new filters in the power filter 2 weeks ago. The hood light is usually on about 12 hours a day.
