First tank,10g hex,AquaClear20 filter,standard aquarium gravel,fake plants,& bubble wand.Started cycling march 25th with fish food. Using dechlorinater. Chemistry is right now:Temp 82 F, PH 7.8, Ammonia 4.0, Nitrite 1.0, Nitrate 5.0. 1. My tap water has a PH of 7.0 – why is the PH in the tank so high?Will it come down after cycling & a water change? Or should I plan for higher PH fish? 2. Is it odd that the Nitrates are so much higher than the nitrites? 3. I’m planning on keeping a 1 species tank of very small fish (such as dwarf rasbora or small tetra): when the ammonia and nitrate get to zero what is next step before fish? I know I’ll need to do a water change but, because I cycle with fish food, there will be a lot of dead food on the substrate. Should I use a gravel cleaner? (I’m afraid that will remove all the bacteria on the substrate). How much water to change? 5. Will I be able to immediately put in approximately 6 fish with an adult size of 1 inch or 5 of 1.5”?

can anyone list some underwater creatures that can go well in a tropical freshwater tank? it does not matter about the size or how agressive they are i will deal with that later. i am an underwater obsessor and know a lot about fish and aquariums but have never really had anything else in my tanks apart from the odd crab, any suggestions? oh and it would help if they can be kept with fish and live fully underwater, thanks! sorry i didnt explain very well, i meant besides fish and thank you i may buy a shrub

I have a 10-gallon freshwater tank with 6 neon tetras in it. The tank became infected with Ich, so I began a treatment cycle using a Malachite Green treatment. The Ich is nearly gone now, as the cycle is almost over, but now in addition to the minor algae growth in my aquarium, I have these lightish brown growths on the sides and on a decorative log I have placed in the tank. They don't just look like algae; they have a definite center point. It looks like some kind of bacteria. The fish seem fine so far, but I'm worried. I could probably scrub it off the sides pretty easily, but I don't want to do anything until I figure out what it is. Right now the patches or "colonies" of brown are slightly smaller than a dime. Today is the first day they have been present. What is this, and what should I do?

I'm about to buy a 90 gallon aquarium with a matching canopy and stand... equipment wise, it has nothing and I pretty much sold everything last December because I wanted to start over. I've kept freshwater community aquariums (peaceful & semi-aggressive) and I currently have a lightly planted tank, and I want to take it to another level to make it worth it. If I get a freshwater planted tank, I want to make it worth it and I'm going to splurge on a Tek T5 HO light fixture worth around $459 dollars, a Co2 system, a reverse osmosis system to change water parameters to match those of the discus, heavy duty canister filters, a forest of plants, and as much Flourite black sand as I can stuff in there, ect ect. This is something I've been posponing on for so long now, I've sort of given up... especially with the high odds of me failing when it comes to keeping Discus, since they're so sensitive. I've also always wanted to step into the saltwater arena, but like many people I'm a bit nervous about going in that area and even though I would absolutely LOVE a reef tank, they're expensive so I'd probably only start up with a FOWLR tank. I've also got no clue when it comes to the stocking... I've read up on easy fish to keep for beginners, but none of them really gets me excited, and makes me want to build a tank around it. Not sure if in comparison, budget and difficulty wise keeping a saltwater tank is harder or easier than keeping a heavily planted tank with discus. I've never kept a heavily planted tank with that fish and obviously never kept a saltwater tank, so a little guidance would help! :) Just want opinions, and if there's any saltwater gurus an estimate of how much I would need to spend on the equipment to make a FOWLR and with the possibility of transforming it into a reef one day cuz I have no clue. ;>

my cousin gave me one it needs sealing though, when it's ready for fish(freshwater only) whats the best way to set this up , cycle it etc. can i use water and stuff outta my already established aquarium. here is what i have in a 20 gallon long I wish to move some of them to the 55 gallon i have a betta thats very aggressive so for some odd reason the tiger barbs he's in with don't bother him he tends be kinda too mean to them actually., 2 silver dollars tiger barbs 6 of those a ruby shark, chinese algae eater, 3 corydoras, one 3 spotted gourami and various ghost shrimp. would 55 be to big for a betta or no with the depth of the water. etc? once those go in the 55 will that be overstocked as the 20 probably already is. also there was a lizard in this 55 gallon so whats the best way to clean that safely for fish. which is why i reseal tanks after lizards used them cause of germs and stuff.pumps, heaters etc what will i need as this one will be the largest tank to date for fish i have ever had. i am going to get a pennplax metal stand for it too. let me know whats good if i can get more fish in it too let me know that i plant to put alotta the rocks outta the 20 in the 55 to start cycling it. .
