We have a 10 gallon tank and we have been looking for some freshwater fish to buy. Looking online we found two breeds of similar size, temperament, and care needs. We were looking at the Painted Platy and the Neon Tetra. Both grow up to 2", are easy to care for and recommended for beginners (like us), and live in the same temperature water. We only have 10 gallons but we would like to house both species. Can we house those in that small of a tank? If so, how many of each can we have in the tank and would having all males be alright? We don't want any offspring right now as we haven't had an aquarium in years. Any other advice or tips we would be very grateful for. :)

I just got my first fishing tank. The fish I have are freshwater fish. The problem is that the water we got in the house is too much chlorine (or bleach, I am not sure how to call it right in English) to a point that the water is not clear and somewhat blurry/whitish. My question is: Would it be ok if I buy regular drinking water from the store and then add it and the add all the bacteria (amonia and so on) and then the fish?? What do you guys think? Some people were saying in their comments that I have to cycle the water with a filter for a week or two. I got one more question.... I don't have time (1or2 weeks) for that! Don't my "NovaAqua+", "AmQuel", and "StartSmart" take care of everything?

i need aquarium salt for my freshwater tropical fish tank, but im not sure how much it is. I get a $12 allowance per week. right now my tank is cycling and the first week im planning to buy new gravel and some decorations. Also, if $12 is not enough to buy gravel, plants and salt, then what fish do not require aquarium salt at all? thanks for answering (:

Hi, all. I just bought aqualights with mount legs for my freshwater tanks. There are no covers between the water surface and the light lens. I wonder if I also need to buy glass covers for protecting the humidity from the lights. What are the outcomes going to be without the covers? I don't have any jumper fish. I more worry about the lights will get damaged. Any one has experiences? Thanks a lot.

what sorts of fish should i get for my 5 gallon tank? also can i use aquarium salt for neon tetras? i wanted to get 6 of them... i bought the salt an hour ago and found out that they dont like it... is it safe to use like half the dosage or what? i dont want to waste 6 bucks i could have paid fo 2 tetras for that! but doesnt mean im getting neons, i just kind of wanted them what would be good for the 5g tank? i already have a betta im tired of it i spent money on a filter, which cant even be used with the betta, cause its too strong and i bought an amazing 30 dollar PLASTIC plant and yes, it damaged my betta i want new fish, im giving my betta away i dont understand petcetera keeps like over 10 tetra's in like a 2 gallon tank why cant i put 6 in my 5? its only 1 over the thumb rule and they look soooo tiny but no one answered my other question CAN AQUARIUM SALT BE USED WITH NEON TETRAS? cause if not ill just return it

I am starting a freshwater aquarium (20 gal), and I am looking to buy some tropical fish. I have a couple of plants in there now that have been in the water for a few days, and the water in the tank has been filtering 5 days prior to placing any plants into the tank. But my biggest fear is that when adding fish, they will not do well together. I am looking to get about 3-5 guppies, 3-5 platies, 3-5 sword tails, 3-5 tetras, a pair of snails, and 1 or 2 clown plecos. Is this too many fish for the tank, and will these fish get along with each other, i.e. territorial issues during mating seasons? I'm not entirely looking to breed any of the fish, but rather having something that looks aesthetically pleasing. I mean, if they do end up mating, then so be it. The tetras that I am interested in is the Long Fin Red Minor Tetra, Cardinal Tetra, or the Orange Von Rio Flame Tetra. And instead of the pleco, would you recommend shrimp or a small catfish? For the snail, I don't want something large. Just something simple and small that will regulate the waste content in the tank.

Ok, im going to tell you how i set up my tank honestly. I need as much help as i can get. -I have a 4 year old 30g tank that i am now using for fish. (My mother gave it to me and i am not even really sure where it came from.. I never asked) -It was used originally before me, as a fish tank. I first used it as a cage for my chameleon. My chameleon died because of worms that the owners never treated as supposed to after taking it out of the wild.. After that i used it for my 2 iguanas which now are in a 50g untill they outgrow it. Now im using the 30g for a fish tank. -The tank was dirty so i washed it outside with dish soap the best i could. -After that i set up the tank in my room away from any major sunlit areas. -I ran the hose from outside into my room and filled the empty tank about 80% -I added a chemical that kills chlorine and stuff which makes the water safe for fish. -I left it overnight. -The next morning, I went to walmart and bought a bubble stone strip (I already had the pump) and a water filter which was for 10-20 gallon tanks.. I didnt have the money and didnt think the 10g difference was that horrific. -I went to pets mart, and bought 3 tiger barbs, and 1 dwarf gourami. I also bought tropical fish flakes, and a 25lb of black aquarium gravel. -I went home and set up my water filter and it up and going. -Then i poured in my black gravel. I didnt wash it before putting it in because the guy at the store told me all fish products are safe and it wasnt needed. -I placed my plastic plants in the tank where i wanted them. (my mom gave them to me and said they were from her old fish tank. I soaked them in hot water over night and rinsed them well the next morning) -After that i let my bagged fish sit in the tank for about 20 minutes.. i dont know why, but the guy at the store told me to. -I fished them out with my hands and placed them in the tank. -My fish seemed fine for the first few hours, then after that the tiger barbs picked a spot in the tank and didnt move around much. The gourami was swimming around and eating his food. -Later on that day my little brother put 2 orange tetras i think it was, from his tank to ours. They seemed to cause problems so we netted them out. -The next morning i woke up and turned on their lights. They were all alive, but the barbs were not moving from their spots.. -Later on that day one of the tiger barbs was swimming at the top of the tank.. Then he started swimming side ways. Then he was floating around the tank without control of him/herself. about 20 minutes later he died. -We read online that the likable cause was the ammonia level in the water. We ran to walmart to buy a ammonia testing kit and ammonia tabs that were supposed to get rid of it. -We ran home and tested the water as directed. It said there was little to no ammonia in the water and what was in the water was safe. I dont know what i'm doing, or what i have done wrong. But a little advice would help because i plan on having many more fish to come. It would be nice if they wouldnt die on me.. :( My gourami chases my other fish! And how would i add salt at this time? I have 3 fish in the tank. During the next water change would i add the amount of salt needed into the fresh water before pouring it in to the tank? It was said that i need to do 25% water changes at first? One more quick segment! What do i do now that i have used dish soap? I'm not trying to sound harsh but to i just wait for my fish to die and start over? I'm I have a 10-20g filter, could i buy another one and have 2 filters? Do i let my water set now and leave the tank how it is? Also will putting my hands in my tank add alot of bacteria even though i have washed my hands? I would like to add more things to the tank later on!
