You heard me right. People always ask about how smart some type of fish is, or whether or not it'll be able to recognize them, or if they'll do an aquatic jitterbug when they approach. It get tiring.
Not to offend any fish owners, but what are some downright dim freshwater fish, in your opinion?
Does the size of the fish or the genus in which it belongs plays a factor in its intelligence level?
Does it vary greatly between individuals of the same species too?
Last two questions are entirely optional. Just list some thick fish.

I used to have 8 guppies and 1 pitbull pleco in my 10 gallon aquarium.. I sold the 8 guppies and got $19 I didn't sell the pleco, because I need a bottom feeder.

I am planning to get a 125g in a couple of days and Im trying to come up with a stock list. Its going to be freshwater with 4 penguin 350's for filtration. Its also going to have to huge power-heads hooked up to 4 sponge filters on the opposite side. I have well water (high ph). I would like to get just a few larger fish. I don't really want african cichlids though. What would you put in it?
A couple options I thought of were:
-2 oscars, a firemouth, and maybe a convict or 2 along the bottom
-4 blood parrot cichlids, 4 pictus catfish, 4-5 angels, and a school of some sort.
-5-6 RB piranha
-6 pictus, 8-12 cory cats, 6 angels, a african BROWN knife, and a few african butterfly fish
wtf hocky, why?
I'm preparing to build a new 70 gallon freshwater aquarium for my foyer and would really love to make it Illinois native themed. I've chosen four aquatic plants to use in the setup which really make up a large amount of the most common aquatic flora. The list includes:
Sagittaria Latifolia (Common Arrowhead)
Potamogeton Illinoensis (Illinois Pondweed)
Elodea Canadensis (American Elodea)
Nelumbo Lutea (American Lotus)
I'm sure these plants could survive in an aquarium with some tropical fish and a fertile substrate, but I'm just not sure where I could find and harvest them. I live near Joliet and some of the local waterways are in park districts but they do not hold these types of flora.
Any ideas?
After receiving a 40gal. (36"x18"x16") from my friend, after months of wanting to setup a new tank, finally ready to. After much research, I have decided 100% to go marine. My only other experience with fish keeping is my 29gal freshwater, which I am very happy with. I am new to saltwater but definitely am confident I can do it. I know I still have much to learn but from the research I have done here are my questions so far:
What filter? I was thinking Eheim Classic 2215, but have heard, altough very good, not the best for saltwater.
I'm going to have live sand and live rock, and eventually coral once the tank matures.
I plan on initially adding maybe 45lbs of live rock. How many lbs for a 40 gal for adequate filtration w/o a mechanical?
What/how many power heads for the rock and eventually corals?
Which protein skimmer would be adequate for this 40 gal? Still need to read up more on skimmers..
Here is what I'd like to stock:
Kaudern's Cardinal (Pterapogon kauderni) x 1
Bicolor Pseudochromis (Pseudochromis paccagnella) x 1
Purple Pseudochromis (Pseudochromis porphyreus) x 1
Six Line Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus hexataenia) x 1
Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) x 1
Yellow Damselfish (Amblyglyphidodon aureus) x 1
Four Stripe Damselfish (Dascyllus melanurus) x1
Blue Sapphire Damselfish (Chrysiptera springeri) x1
Most likely gonna order from liveaquaria.com Any concerns with that list?
Is that over or understocked?
Any information/links very appreciated. Happy new year.
Give me a list of all the fish that you would stock in a 30 gallon freshwater aquarium.
This is my list. I went online and got these items because they seem to fit my wants. I am getting a 50 gallon saltwater aquarium, and I liked these items. I love colorful fish, starfish, and the lionfish. I want to know if all of these are compatible or what, and I really want to keep the starfish, Blue Tang, and Lionfish on the list. Anything else might be able to be thrown out. I also want just some small, cool looking mussels and clams. Could you please revise my list for compatibility, and center it around my favorites, and make some suggestions. P.S. Everything on this list is not going to be bought, I just liked these things. I also would like to get either a BiUbe Pure or a Biorb Life, and any suggestions of fish (freshwater or saltwater). I am redoing my room to be strictly contemporary.

I will be stocking my tank either today or tomorrow and I'd like your opinion on the following options. I was reading up and I would really like to add some balloon mollies to my tank.
http://www.fishlore.com/fishforum/aquarium-stocking-questions/40165-work-progress-freshwater-community-stocking-list.html#post543098
option number eight ^^
and I was thinking I would add some different types of the corydoras ( the panda type is really neat).
So I was wondering, would this be an alright set up? I also wanted to add a snail or a plant of some sort (apple snails possibly?) would that be possible? What type of plants could I add that are relatively easy to care for?
My other option was:
1 male betta
4-6 neon tetras
3-4 corydoras
maybe someone could clarify what amount of the above option would work.
I was also looking into something involving tetras or glofish. If I were to pick an option involving tetras what types of fish and how many could I keep together?
Sorry if these are terrible combinations, I'm new to this so go easy on me. If you have some completely different combinations please feel free to include them. Thanks
oh yes, sorry i forgot to mention the tank is fully cycled and I have a heater
I want to know a little bit more about saltwater aquariums.
I'm thinking about using my 10 gallon tank. (I know it's a little small, but I've seen plenty of people who have 10 gallon saltwater aquariums)
Do I have to have live rock, coral, etc. or can I just put fish in?
how much would salt cost?
How do I put the salt in?
Could I use gravel or do I need to get sand?
What kind of filter do I need? (Please list a cheap one. I already spent a lot of money on my 55 gallon tank for my freshwater fish.)
Is there anything else I'm going to need? I mean like have to have, not something I could just use... I've really had no experience with saltwater anything except for the ocean..... :D
All I know is that saltwater fish are gorgeous and I would like to have one.
And what's a hydrometer? I would also like to know how much one would cost, thanks :D
Are you sure I'd need live rock because there's a saltwater kit at petco that doesn't include live rock?
I am getting a freshwater aquarium. What are the best types of fish to put in it? Please list as many as you can. What types of fish are in your aquarium? (if you have one of course)
Hi i am planning to purchase a 100-120 L freshwater, heated aquarium. I already have 12 male guppies in another tank that will be moved over as well as two cleaners. I really want a Betta so give me a heads up if any of the coices are bad with them i.e i know they some times fight with gourmis.
SO heres my current shopping list.
X2 Corydorus Paleatus
X4 Platy
X15 Guppies
X5 Neon Tetras
X2 Zebra Loach
X2 Algal Feeders
X1 Betta
Are there any other exotic/awesome fish i could encoporate?
Are these too many fish for the tank?
How many could i fit in?
Do my current choices work?
Thanks alot guys i appreciate any help.
Ok, I know it is harder than larger aquariums to keep stable and functional and requires more maintenance but it can be done. I have over 15 years of freshwater tank experience and ready to move up to saltwater, however I only have room on a desk for a 10 gallon aquarium.
I have bought the aquarium, so now I need an itemized list from you on what to do next, like this...
1. Add water and InstantOcean salt
2. Cycle water for a week
3. Blah blah blah, etc...
If someone can give me just an idiot's list like that of what I will need to do before I actually buy any fish, then I would appreciate it. A list is much better than paragraphs.
THANKS!!
p.s. - Specific model numbers would be appreciated too. Like the exact filter I would need Brand+Model #, and any other model numbers I need. Keep in mind it is a 10gallon, so the cheaper the better. I am doing this on a budget.
Basically - if you had to send a Robot to go buy items and set up the 10 gallon for saltwater fish, what list would you give the robot? AGAIN THANKS!!
